Feeding the birds is a great idea. Its fun to watch, it benefits all different types of nature, and brings a large variety of birds to your garden. There are many kinds to bird food too, with suet balls being one of the most common. However, these netted delights can cause serious harm to your feathered friends. Here's why:
When landing on the netting, starlings, young black birds or blue/great tits can get tangled up in the plastic. This has disastrous effects. Either, they tear off a toe, or, even worse, get so stuck that they just hang there, eventually dying of heatstroke, thirst, or getting snatched off by a cat. Sometimes, someone checks in time to same them, but often, all that is left is a leg, still tangled.
Wonderful blog, GotW. I've read all of your recent posts and have both laughed out loud and been inspired! Just bought my first bird feeder and bird seed (no netting, of course). Fingers crossed our London balcony will attract more than just fat squirrels. Look forward to reading more of your extremely diverting writing!
ReplyDeleteAww!!! Thank you so much! It's so nice to have some other readers other than blackmailed family members! (But seriously...) I'm sorry for the lack of posts; I'm making a different blog for wholesome film and book reviews, but it's taking longer than expected. Dont worry, though I'm hoping to get back to posting soon!
